Talk Derby To Me
Derby Day is Saturday, May 1st.
That’s a mere 44 days away.
And we’re only 30 days from Thunder Over Louisville.
Derby Fever is settling in. I love this city in April.
Looking at the date, it seems forever away but it really isn’t. Six weeks will fly by super fast. That’s six weekly photo challenge Wednesdays – time flies when you’re having fun. Which is why I’ve started the countdown to all things good and glorious: The Kentucky Derby Festival.
Louisville comes alive in April. The weather starts looking up, spring is in the air, we put our best foot forward and have two full weeks packed full of fun crap to do. I love it. Everyone is in high spirits and peace fills the Ohio Valley. All in the name of the best two minutes in sports.
My calendar is marked in colored Sharpie – blue for the events I want to attend and red for the events that I make traffic unbearable and need to be avoided at all cost. Chow Wagon and Balloon Glow – blue. Thunder and Pegasus Parade – red. I’m sure a couple more will be marked in blue; we’ll see what the Fest-A-Ville has to offer. But that Chow Wagon – I love you, Chow Wagon – and all of the fair-food carts that are wheeled in for the week. I sure hope that gyro guy is back this year. Nom².
I’ve already got my idea for this year’s Derby cake – last year was a fail [and I will admit I’m too embarrassed to show you the photo]. But my horseys are painted and my design is ready to come to life for the party. Not my party but there will be a party. There’s always a party. With food and beer and gambling. And I’ll be photographing the whole mess. I know, you’re excited too, aren’t you? I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve to make it even more fun.
Forty-four days until Derbydom. Cannot wait. Let the countdown begin. I know my Little Skipper is already marking off the days.
Boo’s Note: I really do like Thunder Over Louisville. It’s beautiful and so much fun. I just don’t like people. And there’s a ton of them at Thunder. I think I’ll watch it on TV again this year.

Hmm.. I know nothing about Derby Day. But I’m looking forward to stopping in here to get schooled.

There are so many things to do around Derby-time that there’s no possible way to fit them in a lifetime. Between the fireworks, little parties, races, galas and the big day itself, there is so much to see and do. So you’ll only be getting the “Brooke Version” of Derby. But it’s still fun. 🙂
Derby takes over the entire region. When I was living in Cincinnati, we’d get a bit of the excitement up there, too. Some smaller events, recipes for mint juleps and pictures of hats in the paper. You definitely always knew when it was Derby season – actually being in Louisville must be a ball if you can avoid the crazy-making traffic and crowds.
It is awesome. I remember when we lived in Indy, no one understood why we celebrated the way we did for a horse race. But when you make a remark about the Indy 500, they’re ready to throw ‘bows. Same thing really; a big hoopla for a race. But it’s so much fun.
The Derby is still on my to do list. It says a lot about it that someone who lives in the area looks forward to it.
I love it. I’ve only been to Churchill for Derby once. And I will not go again unless I have box seats – the Infield is a little too notorious for me. But bring on the Derby parties and bidding!!
