Week 20: Fire

Man oh man.  Fire is tricky.  How do you get a cool shot without a) burning yourself or b) burning your house.  Both very good questions.

I had hundreds of shots to choose from this week.  Every time I saw anything that said “fire”, I took a photo of it because I didn’t know how I was going to capture a flame.  I kept looking back at the photos I took when we were camping and I wanted to recreate those.  But a bonfire didn’t seem feasible.  And it’s illegal in the county limits.  And I was not going to trot my merry ass out into the yard to do anything because it’s cold as all get out.

A flame.  That’s what I wanted.  And that’s what I got.

Here is my fire:

Week 20: Fire

Mrs. Rev came over and we played pyromaniac.  And we proceeded to produce a flame a foot tall in my freshly painted kitchen and a myocardial infarction in my chest (my friend Abby=paramedic=fancy way to say heart attack).  Not really.  But I did freak out for a split second.  The extinguisher was handy but my dumb self did not think “grab the extinguisher” because I ride the short bus.

Next week’s challenge is “toilet.”  I know it’s a little strange but it’s a subject you see [a few times] everyday and one that you wouldn’t think to photograph.  This is a chance to be creative.  And I swear, if I see a toilet with anything in it, I’m removing it from the group.  You’ve been warned, my friends.

Please check out the flickr pool’s photos or click on the challenger roll to see everyone else’s photos.  If you’ve been hesitant to post to the group, please don’t be.  Everyone is very encouraging and kind and you’ll actually have fun reading the comments on your photos.  Or if you don’t post because you think everyone uses a dSLR, well that’s just silly.  I (and others) have used point-and-shoot cameras and Miss Eggatha uses her iPhone quite often.  Think about it.  Then get over it and join.

  1. it’s funny when you think about a flame being beautiful, but it really is.
good job brooke. and feel better.

  2. I absolutely LOVE the shot, B. Hope you don’t have too many burn marks on your kitchen walls, but hey, it was worth it!

    Toilet? Seriously?

  3. This is a stunning image. Seriously, I can’t stop staring at it.

  4. Not to bad on NOT burning your house down. Good thing you didn’t do this right after the kitchen was FRESHLY painted. The fumes and fire might not have gone so well.

This is pretty cool. I like the detail of the burned spots on the paper.

  5. On the flickr page I said that I loved the edges. I really like the furls of the paper and the sharp edges that haven’t been burned. Very cool. My mom and I have both purchased photos of toilets. They can be very cool pictures! I’m looking forward to this coming week.

  6. Thanks for checking out my blog! I love the idea of a weekly photo challenge. I think I’m going to join in, what better week to start than the first full week of the new year!

  7. I just wanted to say hi! I found your blog through Denise’s blog (geekgirl415). I have just started to try and learn how to take pictures and wanted to jump in and join in on your challenges (hopefully my pics will get better with each passing week too). Here’s my first try (hopefully my link on my name works). Thanks again! ~M
